Saved – Escape from Kim´s regime (short version)

Andy and his mother tries to flee from North Korea, but the escape plan goes desperately wrong. After crossing the border safely, their guide does not show up as agreed, and they are stuck in the hillsides in China in minus thirty degrees weather. After three days without food or water, they are suffering from severe frostbite and almost freezing to death. Knowing the high risk of being discovered by Chinese border police and returned to brutal punishment in North Korea, they get onto a local bus and decide to venture into China on their own. On their way, they get unexpected help from a secret network of people, mostly Christians, called the Underground Railroad. Risking their own lives, these people provide logistical support to help bring North Korean defectors to safety. In this documentary we follow the stories of refugees from North Korean as well as the recognized human rights activist Tim Peters – who for two decades has worked to save as many North Korean escapees as possible through the Underground Railroad.

Nil by Mouth is an experimental short based by New York Based, Australian writer/director Kaye Tuckerman. Based on her personal experience with Anorexia, and her struggle with body image and beauty as dictated by contemporary western society and the media. Nil by Mouth explores the notion of beautiful, sexualised, objectified, healthy imagery, juxtaposed with harsh, cruel, unhealthy broken language. There is a belief that an anorexics relationship to body image will remain dismorphic for years after they are ‘well’. In this experimental short, the protagonist attempts to understand this life long battle and trajectory. (*please note, there is nudity in this film).

The Metamorphosis of a Bottle Cap

A seemingly complacent crab is suddenly called to action by mysterious intentions and a chance encounter with an elusive bottle cap.

This traditionally-made stop motion film is about the ‘Reuse’ of an object beyond its intended purpose and is a celebration of the creativity and ingenuity of local people in developing nations. This animated short highlights the concept that perceptions of what is ‘useful’ and what is ‘garbage’ depend on cultural values. The film emphasizes the important role that cross-cultural exposure plays in broadening perspectives and positively affecting lives. Created by a Canadian who lived and worked in East Africa from 2011-17, this narrative is based on real experiences.

A unique blend of approaches are employed including hand-made puppets and illustrations. Local African materials such as seeds, bark cloth, and other traditional fabrics are incorporated alongside re-purposed items such as discarded plastic bottles and other found objects. The choice of these materials and approaches reinforce the environmental and cultural themes of the film and further demonstrate the positive influence one culture can have on another.
